Name: Leevi Mutru
Hometown: Lahti
Country: Finland
Age: 22
Sport: Nordic Combined
Years in the sport: 8
How did you get started in Nordic combined?
I was ski jumper and I had to ski XC also (that was a rule in my ski club). I didn’t like it (skiing) and I quit it for a year. I got a new ski club coach who saw my physical talent in skiing. He changed my head about skiing and I started to training nordic combined.
Goals for this year?
To be a part of Finnish team in Olympics!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Better Nordic Combined athlete
What has been your biggest challenge as an athlete and how did you overcome it?
Overtraining.. I need to be really careful that I find my limits and don’t go over it.
If you were not an athlete, what would you be doing?
I would study something in university. Mathematics I think.
Any hobbies?
Hunting birds and fishing
Favourite music?
Amorphis, Diablo and other heavy metal bands.
What does a typical day of training look like?
Usually it starts at 8-10am at morning to 12 o’clock and afternoon from 4 pm to 6-7pm. It’s my job to go training but it’s my dream work.
Anything people be surprised to learn about you?
I have 5 questions per competition day which I can ask for my team coach Kukkonen. Well, it’s a joke in our team but I really try to complete my little challenge and not to ask more than 5 questions per competition day. Petter originated that because I had too many questions when it was the competition day. I was too impatient to wait for that he tell us times and other things so I was asking for him everything. Nowadays I can keep my mind calm because I know that he will tell us everything important things about the competition. But I still like to have my little challenge on.
What is the funniest thing has happened to you/others while training?
I’m absent-minded sometimes so that makes my life pretty funny. Ones when I was really young I was going to jumping competition from Lahti to Kuopio by ski club’s minibus. My mum drove to the place where the minibus was. When I was packing my baggage into the minibus my mum noticed I forgot my jumpsuit home. So she drove back home and brought the suit to me. I was happy. But on the halfway to Kuopio, I felt that something is wrong. Yes, it was! I didn’t forget only my suit home. I was forgetting my jumping boots, helmet and goggles home. So, on the other hand, I was going to jumping competition without anything important stuff…
Best movie and tv series?
I like to watch many different kinds of crime and action series from Netflix. Sometimes I like to watch comedy or stand up. Can’t say what is the best.
Results you’re most proud of?
10th place in World Cup in my hometown last winter
What inspires you?
Music, speed, stories and mountains
What do you enjoy most about skiing?
I realise that I can go faster than before.
Anyone you would like to thank?
First I want to thank Vuohelan Herkku Oy. They have been my longest sponsorship made my athlete career possible! Then, of course, my family and my coach Kari Jääskeläinen. They’ve supported me so much with the sport. And my girlfriend who understand my sport and “work” so well and give me do it without any bad words. I’m really happy and proud of these things and persons I have.
