How did you get started in your triathlon?
My parents took part after retiring from marathon running. I had always been sporty and triathlon seemed like a great challenge.

Goals for this year?
I wanted to race consistently and get top 10s in WTS races

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Hopefully I would have been to the Olympics and step up to Ironman racing

Richie Porte

What has been your biggest challenge as an athlete and how did you overcome it?
I had a few bad races due to over-reaching and balancing my degree with full-time training. I lost a lot of confidence and it took a long time to get the confidence back

The best advice that you have been given?
Run everyday

Any hobbies?
Reading, cooking, coffee, beer

Favourite music? 
Heavy metal and Celtic fusion 

Favourite book?
Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere series

What does a typical day of training look like? 
Swim in the morning at 7, 10k run, bike ride (long or hard or both) and another run probably 

What is the funniest thing has happened to you/others while training?
We’ve done a pub crawl during a long run on New Year’s Eve.

Any pre-competition rituals?
Nothing superstitious, just a good taper and lots of carbs 

Best movie and tv series? 
Lord of the Rings trilogy and either Peaky Blinders, GoT or Stranger Things

Favourite food while training?
Scone with jam and cream with coffee during a cafe stop. 

Results you’re most proud of?
2nd Abu Dhabi WTS this year. Or Baku European Games where Team GB won gold.

What inspires you?
Wanting to be the best I can be and hearing how others achieve the same thing.

Do you have a saying or motto you live by?
Stop being a P****

What do you enjoy most about triathlon?
Training with my mates and seeing different parts of the world whilst doing so.

Advise that you have for someone doing a triathlon for the first time?
Find a mate to do it with so you can train and race together.

What is the most crucial part of your training? 
Periodisation – doing the right bit of training at the right time of year and making sure i recover properly
